Electoral Politics and Party Identity
I think so, because with the election of Obama as president, its gives Black people hope and they are inspired to do great things. since he is the first African American to become president, this historical move makes it possible for an independent third political party to exist. Society now has a different perception of Black people, therfore that party will get the support they need, not just from African Americans but other groups of people.
Still on the Obama Watch
The media could start featuring more successful and educated African Americans and not just the hip hop and R&B artiste we see so often flashing 'bling bling' and showing off a number cars and mansions. This sometimes gives the youths wrong ideas. They could showcase more African Americans that are succesful in business education medicine and more.
There images are important because they set standards and gives hope and help chage the perception of how African Americans are viewed.
Obama shows that once you set your mind to something you can achieve anything. Mitchelle on the other hand does not only shows off Black beauty, but alos her dignity and intelligence.

Could it really be him?
I love to seeing the Obamas going out to public places, such as the Basketball games, going back to chicago for holiday weekends and going out to resturants and socializing with the public.I think this is good for them, because at the same time, he is doing a heck of a job trying to bring the country back to a normal state. It also gives the vast number of persons who adores him and opportunity to see him.
However, some people are not agreeing with this lifestyle of a president and his critics are saying that he just putting on a show for the media who is in love with him. I dont think so. (haters)

My Mother Said She Didnt Like the name for a Girl Anyway
I think these are great ideas for the recovery and rebuilding of New Orleans. I also think that once these plans are put into perspective recover from that horrible tragedy. Residents who were displaced acrooss America will return wiil return to New.This economic development will also improve the economic status of the city and its people.
I think that these plans can be made a realisticpart of our nations overall economic recovey in the coming decades, becuase with our current president as being African American,he would put inplace adequate resources that these differnt communitys can benefit from. I dont think he'll treat a community that is mostly Blacks the way that President Bush did. (We just have to wait and see).
If the relevant authorites provide cheaper college tuition fees for more African American to go colleges so that they can be more educated and alsoprovide more business opportunities for Blacks, not only in Blacks community but also the larger society. These will provide employment and also improve the lves of African American socially and economically.

I am definately an Obama girl
The Obamas present a positive image of the Black Family. They set standards we could follow and learn from so that we could improve our own family structures.
In today's society, most of the times African American families are labeled as deficient and dysfunctional; where there is no father figure in the home and single mothers are left to raised their children on their own. However, the Obamas put a different perspective on how African American family is portrayed, by showing intelligence, leadership qualities and love for each other. They are role models and gives us all hope, not just in America, but around the world.
During the inauguration season I was watching BET, a reporter was interviewing people on the street and a young Black man said that he never think about marriage, but when he saw the Obamas, he wanted to get married and have children. This is the imapact that the Obamas are making in the Black community, and I'm loving it!

Thinking more about African American Society and Culture
The development of the Black church has played a vital role in the black community. During the civil rights movement the black church was not used only for wporship, but as a political organization.Prominent leaderslike Dr Martin Luther King would use to plan marches and discuses issues facing the Black community.
Over the years the black church has continued to grow, it helps to develop the black community by providing schools and businesses.
The HBCU has played a significant role in the lives of Black people by providing knowledge and better opportunities for them. Even though some of them are facing issues such as proper funding and loosing accredation, they continues to make important contribution to social capital creation in the black communities.
For these organiztion to move beyond these negative practices is to treat everyone eqully.

Considering African Americans and American Culture
Some of the sociological theories relating to Black family life are:Single parenting, this is due to the unemployment, underemployment and aslo incarceration of Black males. This makes it difficult forBlack male to maintain family relationships.
Welfare - because there is no Black male to provide for his family,a single parent with low income has to turn to government for help.
Incarceration - because Black men dont get enough oppotunites, some of them turn to crime and violence which leads to imprisionment and this affects the family economically and socially.
Looking at Black families as deficient and dysfunctional allows the dominant group in society to think of them negatively. The misrepresentation of a Black single mother is that she is on welfare and she is not able raised her children with proper standards, and these children are likely to turn to crime and violence because their is no father role. However, there are so many Black single mothers who raised their children to be respectable and intelligent individuals. Also some men rised by their mothers are more nurting and loving and are capable of maintainig sucessful marriages and relationships. Moreover, some black single mothers chose this lifestyle because they dont want to get married, husband dies or they or divorce.
Our defnition of a nuclear family is so narrow because we tend to follow, or maybe forced to follow what the dominant group regard as a nuclear family. We are made to believe that the dominant culture family is the right family and we as Blacks should try to live that lifestyle.Society should try and see that the Black family is a part of their African heritage, where the extended family and the community plays an important role in the Black family.
Black people doesnt get the same opportunity as Whites. They are not provided with the same economical resources as whites which leads to more unemployment and underemployment of Blacks than Whites. A large number Black Men are incarcerated making it more difficult for Blacks than Whites to maintain a nuclear family.

Making Privilage and Power Visible
In the American society Black women are percieved negatively, some of us are viewed as hostile, sexuall promiscuous and loud. This all goes back to slavery when Black women where characterize by slave owners as Mammies, Jezebels and Sapphire.
In the popular rap music Black women are being seen as sex objects in the music videos with little clothes on and shaking their booty. Also some these derrogatory names that these Rappers used to describe Black women doesnt give a positive feature of a Black women. In 2006, when Snoop Dogg arrives at the MTV music award with two Black women with leash around their necks was very disturbing to me. I think that this was very degrading to Black women.
This makes it easier for people outside the Black communtiy to perceived Black women negatively.I think Mitchelle Obama plays an important role in letting the world see that Black women are intelligent and well educated and not just seen as Jezebls or hoochies.

The history Makers
Most of the interviews I've listen to talked about racism and how it affected their lives. They also talks about their different struggles and obstacle they faced being Black in America.
However, I was inspired by their huge success and accomplishments. In an interview with Carol Moseley Braun, she talks about critiicisms she faced and how she overcame them. This has motivated me to strive for the highest goals in life.

Tell Me More
I'm from the Carribean and I know that Carribean History and African American history have their similarities in which Africans were taken from Africa by Europeans to become slaves in these countries. They were robbed of their human dignity and forced to adopt the Europeans culture.
However, I would like to increase my knowledge about African American History, their struggles and their success.Knowing and understanding more about African American studies will help me to be strong and more determined to be successful.

Beginning Considerations - Starting the Blog, Starting the course
I would like to know more about the history of African Americans, their struggles and their success.
1. I didnt know that there were so many black philosophers and itellectuals in the eighteen and nineteenth centuries such as David Walker(1785-1830), Sojourner Truth(1797-1883),Frederick A Douglas(1817_1895)
2. I didn't know that the civil rights movement and black students had to rebel and protest for the establishment of African American studies in Colleges.
3. Maria Stewart was one of the first black feminist to champion the utility of balck woman's relationships with one anotherin providing a communtity for Balck women's activism and self determination.
1. Do you think that black students have the same privillages has white students in today's society?
2. Are cultural pluralism, multiethnicity, and cultural diversity synonymous terms relative to American education?
3. Do you think that Black women today live up to the ideas and values of the Black feminist mentioned?

What is the White Mainstream?
To identify certain cultural norms and values as white or middlle class means that the domoinant group in society has all the power and privillages than other minority groups. Often times they are the leaders and the minority groups are the followers. The dominant group set certain standards that other groups should follow and maintain. However a society will operate more effectivly if dominant group 'whites'are able to understand the minority groups cultural, their identity and their views.
I think that values stop being white or middleclass when one should not have to live by the values, norms or beliefs of another group, but when every group can live by their own values and norms and also be seen as thier own individuals.

Is Barack Obama an African American?
It seems to be an ongoing issue of self naming and racial identification. But it all comes down to how society views an individual of two different race. Society or people determine who is Black or White based on their accomplishment, success and economic status. There has been so many debates on whether President Obama is black or white. If he was'nt the president or if he wasnt educated the he is, he would just be seen as a regular Black man, no one would even recognized him to say whether he is Black or White.
According to a study done By Northwestern University on "should such racial characterization on people like Obama really matter?" The study shows that it matters and also "the study highlights the legacy of hypodescent in racial categorization in the U.S. According to hypodescent, a child of mixed-race ancestry is assigned to the race of what society considers the socially subordinate parent. Historically, mixed-race children in slave societies were most commonly assigned to the race of their non-Caucasian parent. In the most extreme manifestation of hypodescent in the United States, the one-drop rule holds that if a person has one drop of black blood, he or she is considered to be black."[Northwestern University (2008, October 12). Does It Matter If Black Plus White Equals Black Or Multiracial?. ScienceDaily. Science daily.com]
I think that an individual should be able to identify with the race they are comfortable with and not what society says.

Distinguished African Americans
I was looking at a 2009 calender, I think that it is important to know about these individuals.
Thomas Morris Chester (1834-1892)
He was the first African American correspondent for a major daily newspaper during the civil war. Working for the Philadelphia Press, he covered the activities of African American troops around Petersburg and Richmond,Virginia. Pror to the war,Chester was editor of the publication Star of Liberia. In later years, he practied law in England. His successes helped open the field of mass communications; including radio and TV broadcasting, computer networking, print media and public speaking, to future generations of African Americans, who now participate in these careers in record numbers.
James Armistead
American Spy: In 1781 Armistead, a slave, was a valuable intelligence agent during the Revolution, assisting Lafayette by gathering information concerning British forces at Portsmouth, Virginia. For his work, Aristead was emancipated by an acy of the Virginia Legislature in1786.
Bernice Gaines Hughes
First African American woman to obatian the rank of lieutenant colonel in the United States.
